Autism and AAC

For children and adults diagnosed with autism, the world can present many challenges. For parents, professionals, educators and other caregivers, facing the challenge of supporting persons with autism can be daunting. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Communication aids and skills training are principal areas of support for persons with autism, and can include software and hardware aimed at training everything from the simplest of life and social skills to advanced linguistic behaviours. AAC – Augmentative And Alternative Communicationáincludes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas. For persons who are nonverbal, or who accommodation for both basic and complex communications, there are many technological options that can enhance their lives. This can range from introductory AAC Voca devices such as a Proxtalker, or Go Talk to sophisticated hands-free eye control devices such as the EyeGaze edge.
